Armenia attended an event in the framework of the Summit for Democracy in the Hague

On 29 March, in the framework of the Second Summit for Democracy, co hosted by the Netherlands, Ambassador Tigran Balayan attended the Special edition of Democracy Drinks, a platform which brings together democracy advocates and enthusiasts.

The Ambassador discussed with the participants of the event the urgent importance of defending democracies that are under a threat. The interlocutors were informed of the challenges Armenia faces as a democracy and the determination it has to consistently continue to implement its democratic reform agenda. The Ambassador brought examples of concrete results this determination yielded, including the improved positions in various global rankings, from the Freedom House to the 2022 World Press Freedom Index and the Economist Intelligence Unit.

It was emphasised that Armenia stays committed to its peace agenda having at its heart the human rights protection and the prevention of genocides, ethnic cleansings and atrocities. The developments in and around Artsakh (Nagorno Karabakh) and the ongoing illegal blockade of the Lachin corridor by Azerbaijan and the humanitarian crisis resulting from it was also discussed with different stakeholders.
